Original Sesame Street Characters List With Pictures

Alright, gather 'round, folks. I've got a tale to tell, a tale of a street that's not like any other. A place where cookies are always fresh, birds talk, and even the trash can has a personality. That's right, we're diving into the magical world of Sesame Street, and we're gonna meet its original gang of misfits. So, grab a coffee, get comfy, and let's embark on this nostalgia-fueled adventure.

Once Upon a Time in Sesame Street...

Picture this: it's the late 60s, the groovy era of bell-bottoms and disco. Joan Ganz Cooney and Muppet mastermind Jim Henson had a wild idea. They thought, "Hey, what if we create a TV show that teaches kids their ABCs and 123s, but also tackles serious issues like diversity and sharing? And oh, let's throw in some furry friends while we're at it." And thus, Sesame Street was born.

Meet the Original Crew

Now, let's meet the OG residents of this sunny, sunny street. Remember, these aren't your average neighbors. They're a motley crew of humans, monsters, and even a couple of birds. So, let's dive in!

Big Bird - The Gentle Giant

First up, we've got Big Bird. Now, this isn't your average bird. He's a towering, eight-foot-two, canary-yellow giant. But don't let his size fool you. He's as gentle as they come. Big Bird is the eternal optimist, always ready with a hug or a kind word. He's like the teddy bear of Sesame Street, always there to comfort you when you're feeling blue.

Fun fact: Big Bird was originally going to be green. Can you imagine? Green Bird just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

Cookie Monster - The Cookie Connoisseur

Next, we've got Cookie Monster. Now, this guy is a monster with a capital M. He's furry, he's blue, and he's got one thing on his mind - cookies. He's been known to sing, "C is for cookie, that's good enough for me!" and we can't blame him. Who among us hasn't felt that way about cookies?

Surprising fact: Cookie Monster was originally a trash can. Yes, you heard it right. He was a trash can with googly eyes and a love for cookies. Talk about a rags-to-riches story!

Oscar the Grouch - The Trash Can with Attitude

Speaking of trash cans, let's talk about Oscar. Now, Oscar is a bit of a grump. He lives in a trash can, so who can blame him? He's got a heart of gold, though, and he's always ready with a witty comeback. He's the Sesame Street equivalent of your favorite sarcastic uncle.

Fun fact: Oscar was originally going to be orange. But the creators decided that green was a better fit for their trash-loving friend.

Grover - The Superhero with a Heart of Gold

Grover is another one of Sesame Street's beloved monsters. He's a blue, furry fellow with a heart of gold. He's always ready to help out his friends, and he's even got his own superhero alter ego - Super Grover. He's like the Sesame Street equivalent of your favorite superhero, always there to save the day.

Did you know? Grover was originally going to be a heavyweight boxer. But the creators decided that a kind-hearted monster was a better fit for their educational show.

Bert and Ernie - The Odd Couple of Sesame Street

Now, we can't talk about Sesame Street without mentioning Bert and Ernie. These two are the original odd couple. Bert is neat, organized, and loves to read. Ernie, on the other hand, is messy, loves to play, and has a rubber ducky named Ducky. Despite their differences, they're the best of friends, teaching us all about the importance of acceptance and understanding.

Rumor has it that Bert and Ernie were originally going to be roommates. But the creators decided that they worked better as friends. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Elmo - The Red-Hot Sidekick

Last but not least, we've got Elmo. Now, Elmo might be the newest member of our list, but he's certainly made his mark. He's a red, furry monster with a love for hugs and learning. He's like the sidekick of Sesame Street, always there to lend a helping hand.

Did you know? Elmo was originally going to be a lizard. But the creators decided that a monster was a better fit for their educational show.

And That's Not All, Folks!

But wait, there's more! We've barely scratched the surface of Sesame Street's amazing cast of characters. There's Abby Cadabby, the magical girl who loves to sing and dance. There's Zoe, the imaginative girl with a love for fairy tales. And let's not forget about Gordon and Maria, the human residents of Sesame Street who teach us all about love, kindness, and understanding.

And who could forget about Snuffy, Big Bird's best friend who was once invisible? Or Count von Count, the vampire-like monster who loves to count? The list goes on and on!

So, Let's Wrap This Up...

And there you have it, folks. A whirlwind tour of Sesame Street and its original gang of misfits. From Big Bird to Cookie Monster, these characters have taught us so much about the world and about ourselves. They've shown us that it's okay to be different, that it's okay to make mistakes, and that it's always important to be kind and loving to one another.

So, the next time you find yourself humming the Sesame Street theme song, remember these amazing characters and the lessons they've taught us. And who knows? Maybe you'll even find yourself breaking into a rendition of "C is for cookie" at the office. (But maybe don't. Your coworkers might look at you funny.)

Until next time, folks. Keep on learning, keep on laughing, and remember - the best way to teach is to entertain!
