How Old Was Newt In The Maze Runner

So, there I was, scrolling through my social media feed the other day, and I stumbled upon this meme. You know the one - Newt from The Maze Runner series, looking all kinds of young and innocent, with the caption "How old was Newt in the Maze Runner?" It got me thinking, "Hmm, I've been wondering that myself."

Newt: The Young Glader

If you're anything like me, you fell in love with Newt's character in the books or movies. He's this sweet, intelligent, and sometimes a bit naive kid who becomes one of the most important figures in the Glade. But just how old was he when the story started?

Now, I know what you're thinking, "But Maze Runner is a dystopian future, who knows how old anyone is?" Well, you're not wrong. But stick with me, we can figure this out.

Clues from the Books

James Dashner, the author of the Maze Runner series, has been pretty tight-lipped about the exact ages of his characters. But we can piece together some clues from the books.

In The Maze Runner, the first book, Newt is described as being one of the youngest Gladers. He's also mentioned to be smaller than some of the other boys. Now, I don't know about you, but when I was a kid, I was pretty short too. So, let's put our money on Newt being around 12 or 13 when he first enters the Glade.

Plus, there's a bit in the book where Newt mentions he's been in the Glade for about two years. If we assume he was around 10 or 11 when he first arrived, that would put him at around 12 or 13 when the story starts.

But What About the Movies?

Now, let's talk about the movie adaptations. Thomas Brodie-Sangster, the actor who plays Newt, was born in 1990. When the first movie, The Maze Runner, was released in 2014, he was 24 years old. So, he was definitely not playing a 12 or 13-year-old.

But here's the thing, guys. Actors are often cast for their ability to play a character, not just their age. And let's face it, Thomas Brodie-Sangster pulls off that young, innocent vibe perfectly. So, even though he's older than Newt's supposed to be, he nails the character.

So, How Old Was Newt?

Alright, let's wrap this up. Based on the clues from the books, it's safe to say that Newt was around 12 or 13 years old when he first entered the Glade. But remember, this is all speculation. Dashner hasn't given us a definitive answer, and he might never will. But isn't that part of the fun? Figuring it out for ourselves?

Anyway, that's my two cents on Newt's age. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below. Until next time, happy reading (and speculating)!
